The Portfolio Website Assignment

There are 3 reasons why you create a portfolio website as soon as possible, and review and revise it as often as possible.

P1. Presentation.

You always want to present your work in the most positive light. You never know when that job opportunity or internship might come up so you want to be ready.

P2. Preservation.

We've all seen the about-to-graduate student who hasn't saved anything and has nothing to show. By actively reviewing and revising your portfolio website as often as possible you are always adding to, the archive of your best work.

P3. Practice.

This one might be the most important one, but it's also the most overlooked. If you've never made a portfolio webstie or demo reel before, how would you expect to be good at it? Waiting until the end is too late. Why not take these important things, your portolio and demo reel, and practice the design and creation of them over and over again.

Portfolio Website and Career Links

DUE:

  • Beginning of class
  • 2nd class
  • Week 06

With this assignment you are going to create an interactive website for your portfolio.

You’re going to gather your existing artwork and samples of your creative and other CG work and place them in a galleried website made in Adobe Dreamweaver.

IF it’s small enough, and you feel ready to post it, we MAY upload it to your AIM OLS provided web server.
Otherwise, we’ll content ourselves to gathering it all in a folder to drop off, present and take with us.

More and more frequently professional studios, employers, clients and generally anyone else who wants to give opportunity, are looking to find your work on the web.  It seems as though they can’t be bothered any longer with putting a DVD in a player.

So, to facilitate that, you should at least know the basics of one of the easiest website development tools out there – Dreamweaver.

Specifically: Here's a tutorial to create a floating sidebar ---

What you need to do, (at minimum):

  1. Have a home page, (index.html)
    1. This should have at least two options:
      • A link to a Links page for examples of the kind of work you want to do.
      • A link to a Gallery page for examples of your work.
  1. Your Gallery page should have thumbnails of your work
    1. Each of those thumbnails should link to a larger image of your work.
  2. You should have a simple menu on both your Links page and your Gallery page that will take us to the main pages of your site.
    1. You should repeat that navigation menu on each large image from your gallery.
  3. You should also have a Bio or About Me page in your website.
  4. You should have Contact Info and/or an e-mail  button on your website
  5. You MUST save EVERYTHING in a folder labeled Lastname_Firstname_Website
    1. The entire folder should be dropped off in the appropriate folder on the Drop Off Drive by the beginning of class, 2nd class, week 05.
