Opening Credit Title Sequence

History Channel

Jay Blakesberg Photos

The client is working for the History Channel.
We are to create an opening title sequence for a new, six-part series on pop culture of the last 30 years, 1978-2008.
The series, titled: “Traveling On A High Frequency”, is based on Jay Blakesbergs’ book by the same title.
It features stories and interviews, music and concert footage, archival news reports and analysis behind the photographs of Jay Blakesberg.
The series seeks to tie together world events, politics and pop culture to rock music at the end of the 20th century and into the 21st.
It will be divided into three sections, 1978-1988, 1988-1998, 1998-2008, with each decade consisting of two one-hour segments.
Each decade will have its own unique ‘signature’ look, but the entire series will take its look from the layout and design of the original book.

For this project, we will assume that we have copyright permission for Jay Blakesberg and the History Channel work and images.

The director/producer, with the History Channel, is Rushmore DeNooyer, with narration by Peter Coyote, and featuring interviews with rock stars and news makers of the era.

The target market is adults 25-50, middle class, with a college education.  They were, and some still are, rockers in their youth and are now more mainstream with careers and family.  They are interested in contemporary American history, somewhat politically aware, and either the younger siblings or children of the Baby Boomers.

From the press release for the book:

“Traveling On a High Frequency is 304 pages of pure rock and roll intensity created where light and motion, energy and magic all collide together and crystallize on a piece of film. This photographic journey includes images Jay Blakesberg made as a suburban NJ teenager in the late 1970's of such diverse artists as Muddy Waters, Crosby Stills & Nash, Roger McGuinn of the Byrds, The Grateful Dead, Eric Clapton, and Bob Dylan. After his arrival in San Francisco in the mid 1980's, this serious hobby transformed in to a career with assignments from leading music magazines documenting the newly exploding birth of alternative rock. Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, and Jane's Addiction were all playing small clubs and starting their ascension to the top while Blakesberg was there to capture it on film. A 1987 assignment for Rolling Stone Magazine photographing a free U2 concert in downtown San Francisco was the beginning of a string of over 250 assignments for the venerable rock magazine. With higher profile assignments came opportunities to work with artists such as Carlos Santana, Tom Waits, John Lee Hooker, Radiohead, Neil Young, Sammy Hagar, BB king, Tracy Chapman and many others. Onstage, in the photo pit, backstage, on location, and in the photo studio is where Blakesberg spent a solid 22 years documenting the true zeitgeist of the pop culture experience known as ROCK and ROLL. Capturing that "Magical Musical Moment" for magazines, record companies, and the artists themselves required a combination of creativity, technical knowledge, and a passion for the music that was unfolding in front of his lens. The photographs in this book will take you on an exciting journey thru 3 decades of rock and roll seen thru the eye's of Jay Blakesberg. Jay's work has appeared in hundreds of books and magazines thousands of times, including over 250 Rolling Stone Magazine assignments.

Featuring over 1200 intimate and visually exciting photographs taken on and off stage of many legendary artists including: Neil Young, Iggy Pop, Joni Mitchell, Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker, Suzanne Vega, The Rolling Stones, Dr. Dre, Bob Dylan, Snoop Dogg, Tom Waits, Boz Scaggs, The Grateful Dead, Nirvana, BB King, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Tori Amos, Barenaked Ladies, Tracy Chapman, Joe Satriani, Phish, Radiohead, Primus, Sonic Youth, Pearl Jam, Sammy Hagar, Soundgarden, Ben Harper, Janes Addiction, Elvis Costello, The Flaming Lips, REM.”
